Description

ATCO Power is a developer, project manager, owner and operator of independent power projects worldwide including Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.  The company is a member of the ATCO Group, one of Canada’s premier corporations.  Our GT & Hydro group currently has a vacancy at our power generation facilities in Valleyview, Alberta, Canada for a Turbine Plant Operator.

 

The Town of Valleyview is located 111 km east of Grande Prairie, Alberta, on Highway 43 and has a population of approximately 1,790 people. It serves a trading area of around 8,600 people and is supported primarily by oil and gas and agricultural industries. Peace River is located 140 km to the north while Edmonton is located 345 km to the south of Valleyview. 

Responsibilities
  • Submit unit capacity information to the Real Time Desk Operator and restate as necessary to ensure unit capabilities can be achieved.
  • Respond to system dispatch by starting/stopping/switching and operating gas turbines and ensuring that turbines are run according to established guidelines and the Alberta Safety Association codes and standards.
  • Monitor, inspect, and take readings of station instruments, meters and alarms and record performance of units.
  • Perform various administrative functions including the completion of various operating and maintenance reports.
  • Monitor and maintain records of site inventory of consumables, tools, and spare parts
  • Observe and record overall machine health by checking for leaks and noises, monitoring temperature and vibration, and monitoring abnormal machine conditions. This would apply to water treatment plant and waste water treatment plant systems, gas turbines, generators, pumps, boilers, heat exchangers, fire systems, gas compressors, buildings, etc.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance including cleaning, clearing of snow, minor equipment adjustments, collection of samples, valve change outs, belt replacements, painting, and other duties as required.
  • Prepare requisitions for replacement parts, consumables, materials, and contracted work.
  • Investigates and prepares loss production reports as per Loss Production Policy.
  • Investigates and prepares loss control incident reports as per Loss Control Reporting Policy
  • Facilitates and in some cases supervises the work of contractors on site
  • Provides input to the Operations Manager for budget processes.
  • Issue work permits and isolations as per approved safe work processes for electrical and mechanical contractors and/or internal personnel.
  • Must provide on call coverage.
Qualifications
  • A grade XII diploma complete with a valid Fourth Class Certificate of Competency in Power Engineering or a valid Trade Certificate.  Preference will be given to the candidate with:
  • Related experience in the operation and maintenance of generating equipment.
  • Well developed interpersonal skills, and a high level of personal initiative and motivation.
  • A working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Good understanding and experience in the use of basic hand tools used in operating and maintenance environments.
  • Advanced troubleshooting experience is desirable.
  • The ability to work independently and take initiative to plan and execute work.
  • Demonstrated use of computer operating systems such as XP (MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS excel), and work order systems.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal) skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Must have a valid Drivers License.
