SYSTEM CONTROL CENTRE OPERATORS

VEGREVILLE

 

ATCO Electric is currently looking for assistant and qualified System Control Centre Operators to work within the challenging field of System Control Centre operations. Working with a team of dedicated Operators that oversees and controls the operation of ATCO Electric’s transmission system, this position is based in Vegreville and will operate out of a state of the art control centre which is presently under construction.   Using the latest in software technology, Operators coordinate planned outages, respond to unplanned outages, and direct all distribution.  The position involves the real time operation of ATCO Electric and affiliate transmission facilities and as such considerable interaction is required with Transmission and Distribution Department’s operating and maintenance staff as well as the operating staff at the Alberta Electric System Operator, AltaLink, B.C. Transmission Corporation and SaskPower.
Responsibilities
  • Monitoring and controlling of voltage, load and frequency to maintain security and reliability of the transmission system using computer based control system (SCADA).
  • Arrangement and direction of switching of ATCO Electric transmission facilities.
  • Preparation of permits to guarantee isolation and safety for work crews performing maintenance or repairs.
  • Coordination of scheduled outages to transmission facilities to ensure safe and reliable operation of the ATCO Electric transmission system.
  •  
  • A combination of shift work is involved.  The successful candidate will be expected to reside within the recognized boundaries of the Vegreville community and provide after hours on-call coverage.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent with Certification of proficiency as a Power Lineman Journeyman, Power Systems Electrician, or Third Class Power Engineer OR A Technology Diploma related to the electrical field of study from a recognized institute of technology OR Completion of an industry recognized power system operator training program
  • Related utility experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, or commissioning of electrical utility equipment and/or facilities would be an asset.
  • Proven competency and analytical skills in electrical theory and math (i.e. algebra & trigonometry) including formal course work.
  • Strong problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills both written and spoken English including formal course work.
  • Possess leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software products (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Employees in this position are expected to successfully challenge the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s Transmission Operator Certification exam within two years of the commencement of this position.

  • Successful candidates for this position will be required to participate in an external power system operator assessment.
