Under the supervision of the Platoon Chief/Deputy Platoon Chief, Fire Fighters conduct daily platoon duties. Drives and operates fire-fighting vehicles.
Afghanistan is recovering from armed conflict and is considered a “war-torn” country. While hostilities have diminished, foreign military armaments, particularly land mines, are present throughout the country. You will be expected to conduct your duties and responsibilities within the confines of the Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Given that the incumbent will be residing in the Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, he/she should expect that both living and working conditions will not be to the standard he/she may be accustomed to.

Responsibilities:
- Participate in fire fighting operations, rescue operations, fire prevention programs, fire fighting training activities. Be able to prepare reports concerning the fire services; participate in the inspection, testing and maintenance of fixed and portable fire extinguishing systems, water distribution systems and all other equipment related to the fire services.
- Drive and operate fire fighting apparatus and utility vehicles, under supervision, including the following:
- Take action as required by SOP’s and complies with the fire department policy.
- Perform in a professional manner that prevents damage, loss or unnecessary financial loss to Fire Department equipment and materials.
- Accept responsibility for errors, personal shortcomings and be able to accept constructive criticism and correct downfalls.
- Be familiar with KAF safety regulations, in particular the safety regulations which pertain to the Fire Services and operations. No deviation is permitted from approved practices especially with respect to safety equipment.
- Perform various other duties as assigned.
- Participate in fire fighting and rescue operations by:
- Driving and operating fire fighting apparatus.
- Removing personnel from an area of high risk to an area of relative safety.
- Executing fire extinguishing procedures.
- Providing Advance First Aid & CPR to the injured.
- Returning equipment to a state of normal stand-by readiness after every use.
- Maintains fire fighting rescue tools (manual & power), maintain portable pumps.
- Participate in required fire fighting training activities.
- Maintain a physical fitness standard as required by Fire Services policy.
- Participate in Fire Prevention and Life Safety inspections and conducting:
- Instructing non-fire fighting personnel and various organized groups; and conducting fire inspections.
- Participates in the inspection, testing and maintenance of all fixed or portable Extinguishing or detection systems, fire apparatus and water distribution systems by:
- Assisting in the inspection, testing and maintenance of all fire suppression systems, fire detection systems, fire alarm systems, water distribution systems; and carrying out inspections, testing and maintenance of hand portable Firefighting equipment, Life Safety equipment and fire fighting vehicles.
- Maintains a high level of cooperation between peers, subordinates and supervisors:
- Setting an example by maintaining a high standard with respect to dress, department and communication. Represents the Fire Services in a professional manner;
- Demonstrating initiative and utilizing time well, anticipating problems, and offering solutions.
- Executing effective time management by completing assignments on time or earlier.

Qualifications:
- Hold a valid civilian driver license and be able to obtain a KAF driver license.
- Qualified to NFPA Standards or Equivalent.
- NFPA 1001, Fire fighter Qualifications.
- NFPA1002 Fire Apparatus driver /Operator.
- NFPA 1003 Airport Firefighter / NFPA Airport Crash Driver; and
- NFPA 472 Haz-Mat.
